Solid wood furniture maintenance: practical tips to last 50 years
A piece of furniture in solid wood Well-made furniture lasts 50 years. If well-cared for, even 100. The difference between furniture that can be passed down and furniture that needs to be thrown away after ten years lies primarily in maintenance. It's much simpler than you think.
The golden rule: no aggressive products
Solid wood does not tolerate aggressive detergents. Nothing bleach, Nothing pure alcohol, Nothing industrial degreasers. For daily cleaning, simply use a soft microfiber cloth slightly dampened with water and a few drops of white vinegar or neutral soap. Dry immediately.
The water stains
A fresh water stain can be wiped off immediately with a soft cloth. A water stain that has already settled (a white mark) can be removed by rubbing with a damp cloth and very fine wood ash, or with a little walnut paste (breadcrumbs mixed with walnut oil). Work gently.
Periodic oiling
Furniture with an oil finish (table tops, worktops, integrated cutting boards) should be oiled 1-2 times a year. Apply linseed oil or specific wood oil with a cloth, let it absorb for 30 minutes, and remove the excess with a clean cloth. It restores depth and protection to the wood.
Superficial scratches
A small scratch on oiled wood can be "healed" by applying oil to the scratched area: in many cases, the scratch disappears visually. On lacquered and varnished surfaces, a light scratch can be touched up with special pencils (commercially available, even in custom colors).
Humidity: the only real enemy
The solid wood “works”: it expands with high humidity, it contracts with low humidity. Houses with summer+winter heating can create problematic cycles. humidifier In winter (40-60°C of humidity in the room), avoid the most common cracks. Never place wooden furniture in contact with radiators.
Wax: the periodic restoration
On furniture with a wax finish we recommend a wax coating Every 2-3 years: soft cloth, neutral or wood-colored paste wax, spread thinly, and polish with a dry cloth. The furniture will look like new again.
What NEVER to do
Don't place very hot objects (pots, irons) directly on the wood. Don't spill water or liquids and leave them there. Don't use sandpaper or metal scouring pads. Don't drag heavy furniture (its legs are living).
The art of doing nothing
Often, the best maintenance is the least: clean lightly, gently, and give the wood time to live. The patina that forms over the years isn't a defect: it's the piece's signature.
