Invisible hardware: hinges, guides and mechanisms

When you look at a piece of furniture, you look at the wood, the color, the handles. Then you open and close it thousands of times a year. That's where craftsmanship comes into play. hardware: the invisible components that decide whether a piece of furniture will remain stable or begin to sag.

What is meant by hardware

Hinges, drawer slides, cabinet lift systems, sliding and flush-fitting door mechanisms, adjustable feet, and suspension systems for free-standing furniture. Anything that allows one part of a piece of furniture to move relative to another.

Hinges and adjustment

A modern hinge adjusts along three axes: height, depth, and lateral. This ensures even gaps between adjacent doors, even when the wall isn't perfectly level. Quality is measured by the durability of the adjustment.

The drawer guides

Full-extension runners allow you to reach the bottom of the drawer without having to remove it. High-quality ones slide smoothly even when fully loaded and slide back in a controlled manner. In handle-less furniture they also integrate the opening system.

Slow down and open by pressure

Two different mechanisms that are often confused. The slow-action mechanism slows the closing process and prevents a slam. The push-open mechanism allows the door to be opened by pushing, and is the solution that allows for completely smooth doors, without handles or grooves.

Wall unit systems

In the kitchen, tall cabinets open upward rather than sideways: no doors open at head height. Lifting systems hold the door in place in any position and must be calibrated for the actual weight of the panel, including the paint.

Suspensions of furniture detached from the ground

A wall-hung piece of furniture places all its weight on the wall. It requires properly sized brackets and, above all, a suitable fastening for the type of wall—which in Apulian homes can be tuff, stone, or perforated brick. This is a check we perform during the survey, not on the construction site.

Why hardware affects the estimate

The performance difference between a basic component and a high-end one is clear: guaranteed cycle times, quietness, adjustment stability, corrosion resistance. This is one of the factors that explains why two seemingly identical pieces of furniture aren't exactly identical.

The detail you can feel with your hand

Hardware is the only part of a piece of furniture that can be judged by touch. A door that closes with a full, silent movement conveys quality before any description. This is why it's never the best option to skimp on.
